Traveling after having a SCI can be challenging, especially for people who use a wheelchair. You might need to modify your vehicle for the person with SCI. The main factor is the type of used wheelchair.

People with manual wheelchairs may be able to get into a car with or without help from another person. Manual wheelchair can be folded when being moved. Support person with a person with power wheelchair may need to modify the car with a ramp and wheelchair lock-down mechanism.
Public Transportation Options
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has made public transportation easier for people with disabilities. Many communities provide accessible buses and trains. Sometimes Paratransit service picks you up and drops you off at desired location. These options are typically the least expensive options for accessible public transportation. Check with your local public transportation system to learn about transportation services in your community.

People with disabilities can use professional wheelchair vans or ambulette services. These door to door transportation services are typically provided by private businesses. These services can be expensive, as most businesses charge a flat rate plus a certain rate per mile. You can find services in your area by searching for “wheelchair transportation services.” Often Medicaid will cover these services for transportation to and from medical or therapy appointments. Check with your private insurance company to check if these services are covered.
