CHOOSING A SKILLED NURSING FACILITY OR LONG-TERM ACUTE CARE HOSPITAL

For a person with SCI who leaves rehabilitation but can’t go back home, check out a skilled nursing facility (SNF). SNF provides skilled nursing care under a doctor’s supervision with rehabilitation services. This is a short term solution with licensed nurses and doctors to prepare people with SCI for their home. SNF is not a nursing home. Nursing homes are more long term settings for people who need care most of the time.
Another choice is a long term acute care facility (LTAC). LTAC is for people in earlier stages of recovery. More medical services are provided in LTAC than rehabilitation centers of SNF. People stay here for 10 - 40 days with the care of physicians, nurse practitioners, and/or physicians’ assistants.
